HISTORY

Dr. Martens' journey began as a modest work-wear boot that even found use as a gardening shoe. However, its transformation into one of the most culturally relevant brands of the modern era is a captivating story. Born in post-war Germany, Dr. Klaus Maertens, a soldier nursing a broken foot, crafted an air-cushioned sole for enhanced cushioning and traction during his recovery. Teaming up with Dr. Herbert Funk, a mechanical engineer and former classmate, they utilized discarded rubber and military supplies to produce their innovative footwear. By 1959, they sought to expand their business overseas, catching the attention of the Griggs family, known for their sturdy shoes and work boots in England. The collaboration led to the introduction of Dr. Martens' distinctive footwear to the UK in 1960, featuring the iconic 1460 eight-hole boot with its rounded upper, trademark yellow stitching, and Airwair branding.

Dr. Martens soon found popularity among postal workers, factory workers, and police officers. However, it was the emergence of the skinhead sub-culture that cemented the brand's place in youth culture. The robust 1460 boot became an essential part of the skinhead uniform, symbolizing the working-class roots and rebellious spirit of the movement. As different music genres and sub-cultures emerged, Dr. Martens remained a favored choice for individuals seeking to express themselves. From glam to goth, punk rock to new romantic, each genre found its voice in the iconic boot known simply as 'docs' or 'DMs.'

In recent years, Dr. Martens has experienced a resurgence in popularity, with strong sales and global recognition. The brand is available in numerous stockists worldwide and boasts standalone stores. Alongside their timeless styles, Dr. Martens produces industrial work boots and collaborates with renowned designers and labels such as Yohji Yamamoto, Nepenthes, Supreme, and A Bathing Ape. Noteworthy collections include The Vintage Collection, which replicates the original Dr. Martens styles from the 1960s, and the Made in England Collection, crafted to the highest quality in the original Northamptonshire factory. These collections, although comprising only 1% of Dr. Martens' production, showcase the brand's commitment to heritage and craftsmanship.
